In the first two days, dozens of people were arrested, a couple of police officers suffered minor injuries, and businesses are left cleaning up messes of broken windows. On a night when families gathered to celebrate and enjoy fireworks in our city, it is disheartening to witness violence disrupting their Independence Day evening. The incidents we observed in Uptown last night are unacceptable, and I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to the police officers and first responders who were on the scene. Later in the evening, CMPD said three men were charged with impeding traffic, while a woman was charged with impeding traffic, citing a riot, and assault on a government official. Police said this week that the officer who shot Scott was not wearing a body camera and was in plainclothes, but other uniformed officers who were with him were wearing cameras. According to police, Scott emerged from his vehicle with a gun and refused orders to drop it; Scott’s family members contend that he was not armed, and was holding a book.
"The officers were met with violence and hostility, with protesters throwing objects," the department said in its initial press release. "Over the course of several hours, the CEU gave multiple dispersal orders in English and Spanish and were again met with violence from protesters wielding sticks, rocks and other items." Protesters have clashed with police on the I-277 outer loop ramp. A line of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers on bicycles blocked off protesters. During Friday night’s protests, three CMPD officers were hurt and one of their stations along with several of their vehicles were damaged.
Officials said there were a variety of charges such as assault on a government official, failure to disperse, breaking and entering, possession of a dangerous weapon at a demonstration and disorderly conduct. Even though some protesters acted aggressively, Channel 9′s veteran crime reporter Mark Becker spoke with protesters who want to see this play out peacefully. Across the United States Wednesday night, protests and demonstrations followed. Tyler Wilson told CBS affiliate WBTV he was working at home when he heard officers calling for someone to come out of a neighboring house. In a later statement, Mr. Biden called the officers "heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm's way to protect us. We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded."

Police initially believed there were two shooters involved in the incident, including the individual killed in the initial shootout, but Jennings said Tuesday he's not ready to say there was a second shooter.
